WASHINGTON (CBS DC/AP) — Iranian President Hasan Rouhani says in an interview that he received a “positive and constructive” letter from President Barack Obama congratulating him on his election.
“From my point of view, the tone of the letter was positive and constructive,” Rouhani told NBC News in a Wednesday interview. He went on to say that his administration would never develop nuclear weapons and that he’s optimistic about future talks with the West.
Rouhani told NBC News, “It could be subtle and tiny steps for a very important future,” according to a translation of a clip on NBC’s website in advance of the full interview to be aired later Wednesday.
NBC separately quoted Rouhani as saying his administration will never develop nuclear weapons and that he has full authority to make a deal with the West on the disputed nuclear program. But it did not show that part of the interview on its website.
