WASHINGTON — Family members are identifying and claiming the bodies of people killed at the Washington Navy Yard.
The medical examiners’ office in Washington is performing autopsies on the 12 people killed in Monday’s shooting at the Navy Yard as well as the gunman who was killed in a gun battle with police.
Office of the Chief Medical Examiner spokeswoman Beverly Fields said that as of Wednesday morning two bodies had been released. She declined to say how many autopsies have been completed.
Fields said the bodies will be released once the next of kin identifies each body and takes other steps, including securing a funeral home.
