WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — District of Columbia Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells is calling for increased efforts to keep automatic weapons out of Washington after a deadly shooting rampage claimed the lives of 13 people, including the gunman, at the Navy Yard Monday morning.
Wells, who is running for mayor, serves as the chairman of the District’s Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety which oversees the Metropolitan Police and the Fire and Emergency Medical Services Departments.
“Gun violence has plagued our city and our country for far too long,” Wells said. “I am committed to working with Police Chief Cathy Lanier, as well as leaders in Maryland, Virginia, and in Congress to increase efforts to keep automatic weapons out of dangerous hands and out of our city. Every effort must be made to keep shooting massacres like this from ever happening again.”
Alexis was shot and killed by authorities inside the building.
“My heart goes out to all those whose lives were lost and to their families,” Wells added. “I am praying and hoping all those injured have speedy recoveries. Our District emergency responders did a phenomenal job, and I couldn’t be prouder of their heroic work and that of all the men and women in uniform who responded to the scene (Monday).”
