VIENNA, Va. (CBSDC/AP) – An arrest has been made in the death of a Virginia teen who was killed outside a Fairfax County hotel early Sunday morning.

Authorities say 23-year-old Jose Alberto Blanco-Calzadilla was in custody after surrendering to police on Sunday. It wasn’t immediately clear if he had a lawyer.

He’s accused of shooting 16-year-old Gerard Gomez outside the Residence Inn on Westwood Center Drive in Vienna early Sunday morning. Police believe a party inside the hotel may have spilled onto the sidewalk, and witnesses told WNEW’s George Mesthos that a fight broke out.

Gomez, of Mount Vernon, was pronounced dead at the scene after efforts to resuscitate him failed.

Blanco-Calzadila’s arrest was announced as more than 300 mourners gathered for a candlelight vigil for Gomez in Alexandria.

Counselors will be available to students at Mount Vernon High School, where Gomez was a junior, beginning Monday.
