BROOKFIELD, Wis. (AP) — U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan says the House will take up immigration reform this fall, but he won’t be supporting the bill that passed the U.S. Senate.

The Wisconsin Republican spoke Friday about immigration in response to a question following his speech to a business group in Brookfield.

Ryan has been working largely behind the scenes in Washington on an alternative to the Democratic-backed Senate plan.

Ryan says his priorities are first securing the border, then moving forward with creating an effective guest worker program and way for people who aren’t here legally to gain citizenship.

Ryan says he opposes giving people who are here illegally amnesty and instead wants to create a probationary status for them as they work their way toward citizenship.
