CAMBRIDGE, Md. — Maryland Natural Resources Police are identifying a Cambridge teen who drowned after he and another teen jumped from a fishing pier into the Choptank River.
A passer-by reported the pair in swimming trunks jumping from the Dorchester County side of Bill Burton Fishing Pier State Park on Wednesday. Officials say both teens made it to the U.S. Route 50 bridge pilings, but then one teen, 16-year-old Nathan Smullen, disappeared.
Crews rescued one teen from the piling and he was treated at Dorchester General Hospital and released.
Police say dive crews recovered Smullen’s body hours later and his body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy.
