WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House is canceling its annual summer picnic on the South Lawn for Congress members and their families.

The picnic was originally scheduled for June, but the White House postponed it until September, saying that President Barack Obama’s busy schedule, including two foreign trips, made it too complicated.

The annual event brings lawmakers and their families to the White House to sample burgers and take photos with the president and first lady.

The Associated Press obtained a notice from the White House Office of Legislative Affairs to congressional offices that says lawmakers can bring family members to the White House holiday ball instead. Only members of Congress typically attend that event.

The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment and gave no reason for the cancellation.
