LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Montgomery County Police are investigating a small explosion that occurred near the department’s Gaithersburg headquarters Tuesday morning.

Authorities first received reports of a blast in the building’s parking lot, located at 100 Edison Park Drive, around 11:09 a.m. Responding bomb technicians discovered a “low-grade explosive device” which they believe may be a firework.

Police say they have questioned a juvenile male seen in the parking lot prior to the blast. The youth’s mother was inside the building at the time of the incident. Officers stopped the woman’s vehicle as she and the boy were attempting to leave the headquarters, police say.

The boy was released after being questioned by authorities.

Police say no one was injured during the explosion and no operations were affected.

The Montgomery County fire and transportation departments also have offices inside the building. Employees were not evacuated during the investigation, although the complex was briefly closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
