RICHMOND, Va. — A gelding in Prince George County is the first confirmed case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in Virginia this year.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said Monday that the 7-year-old Paint was euthanized on Aug. 31. The horse hadn’t been vaccinated for the disease.

There were eight cases in Virginia in 2012.

The department says there haven’t been any reported cases of West Nile virus in horses in Virginia this year.

State veterinarian Dr. Richard Wilkes encouraged horse owners earlier this year to establish a vaccination schedule with their veterinarians.
