LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Prince George’s Hospital Center is running on backup power after a fire in the boiler room disrupted three transformers Thursday night.
Officials are treating the outage as a “mini disaster” and will reroute all ambulances and Medevac helicopters to other locations until the power is restored.
Crews are expected to have the majority of power back online before 9 a.m. The building’s air conditioning unit will remain on backup generators until noon Friday.
The hospital says generators provided adequate power to prevent disruption of care to the 214 patients staying at the medical center.
Walk-in patients are still being accepted at the emergency room during the outage, but the hospital is rescheduling all elective and routine surgeries until power is fully restored.
Doctors are still able to perform emergency surgery during the outage.
