WASHINGTON (CBSDC) - In the same day a Native American tribe in upstate New York announced it will launch a radio ad campaign pressing for the Redskins to change their name, in whichever city the team’s 2013 schedule brings them, evidence has also surfaced that a major source for NFL news will refrain from using the team’s name in online publication.

On Thursday, Peter King took NFL fans inside the playbook of the zone-read offense, following Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan around Ashburn to track the evolution of the offense that took the league by storm last season, in his latest piece — The Future or Fad?

King makes the case that it’s not just the NFL’s latest trend – that despite how much time defensive coordinators have devoted to devising a plan of attack against it – the zone-read is here to stay.

He also filled the page with a whopping 2,746 words – and not one mention of the name ‘Redskins.’

Nearly one week ago, we learned from a writer for King’s website – TheMMQB.com – that plans were in place to avoid using ‘Redskins’ online in the upcoming season.

“I know that our site, we’ve talked about it, and we’re not going to use Redskins in our writing,” Robert Klemko told CBS Sports Radio’s MoJo with Chris Moore and Brian Jones.

And although King himself later told The Big Lead’s Jason McIntyre that “no final decision has been made,” The Future, or a Fad? suggests an advancement in the storyline.

Regardless of where you line up on the Redskins name debate, the fact remains that powerful online news outlets are vocalizing their contempt with “The Washington Football Team,” and have aligned themselves in lockstep against the name’s continued use, through virtual silent protest.

What once was thought just to be a divisive topic destined for nothing more than offseason fodder – peaking in May when Redskins owner Dan Snyder told The USA Today “We’ll never change the name. It’s simple. NEVER” – the debate has now surged forward, breaching the onset of the 2013 NFL season.

It begs the question: now that the outcry has seemingly reached its boiling point, is the Redskins name debate The Future or Fad?

But it’s worth noting, saying King didn’t mention the name Redskins isn’t entirely true. It does appear in the tags along the bottom of the page. SEO baby!
