Police: Woman Tried to Kill Ex-Boyfriend’s Young Son
LANDOVER, Md. (CBSDC/AP) — An 8-year-old boy fought off his father’s ex-girlfriend as she allegedly tried to kill him over the weekend, Prince George’s County police said.
Helen Marie Newsome allegedly broke into their home in the 6700 block of Munsey Street in Landover late friday night and hid for more than 12 hours until the boy’s father went to work Saturday morning. Police say Newsome then covered the boy’s face with a pillow and beat him in the head with a dumbbell weight.
The boy fought off Newsome and escaped to a neighbor’s house. He was treated at a local hospital for injuries to his head and has been released.
Newsome, 26, jumped out a window, but police say she was arrested at her home in the 200 block of East Inwood Street in Landover later Saturday morning. Police said she admitted to assaulting the boy.
The boy’s father recently broke up with Newsome. She is charged with first-degree attempted murder and she’s currently being held on a $500,000 bond.
Online court records do not list an attorney for Newsome.
