ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski is not ready to support President Obama’s plan to punish Syria.
The Alaska Republican says she is concerned about Syria’s alleged use of chemical weapons in an Aug. 21 attack near Damascus, but says the Obama administration has yet to provide a clear picture on a timetable and what goals are being sought.
Rather than rush for a vote, Murkowski said Obama should call Congress back to engage in a “vigorous” debate about the next steps ahead.
Obama said Saturday he would seek congressional approval for a military strike on Syria. Lawmakers from both parties had pressed him to do so.
Congress hasn’t formally declared war since World War II.
