Man Killed in Standoff with Police in Fairfax County Identified

LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — The man shot and killed during a standoff with police in Springfield Thursday has been identified.

Fairfax County Police responded to a home in the 7900 block of Pebble Brook Court for a reported domestic disturbance around 2:40 p.m. Police say a man was outside of the home when officers arrived and he refused to leave the residence or allow officers to enter the house.

Police then attempted to negotiate with the man, according to authorities. During the negotiations, an officer fired a single gunshot at the man who then barricaded himself inside the home.

A hostage rescue vehicle was used to safely provide aid to the man, police say, but once officers entered the home they found the man dead.

The man has been identified as 46-year-old John Geer.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on routine administrative leave during the investigation, according to police.
