ALEXANDRIA, Va. (CBSDC/AP) — Fairfax County fire officials say a 54-year-old man injured in a fire at an Alexandria townhome has died.
Crews called to a home on Venoy Court on Thursday night found flames contained to a second-floor bedroom. Relatives who escaped told firefighters that a man was still inside.
Deputy Chief Chuck Ryan, a county fire department spokesman, says the man was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died. He’s been identified as Clifford Johns, a resident of the home.
Ryan says the fire extended to the home’s attic and damaged two neighboring townhouses. Officials estimate that the blaze caused about $50,000 in damage. The cause is under investigation.
