LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — The Obamas are going solar. The Washington Post reports that roof panels are being installed atop The White House this week.

The announcement is a long awaited one. In 2010, then-energy secretary Steven Chu said solar panels and a solar hot water heater would be installed at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue within the year.

According to Jamie Henn, of 350.org, the decision to begin using solar energy is a display of leadership on green living and climate change.

“It’s a long time coming but we’re glad to see the President doing a little bit of home improvement,” he says.

350.org’s primary goal is to “solve the climate crisis,” according to its website.

The Post report says solar panels are not an entirely new concept for The White House. Jimmy Carter had several installed in the late 1970s, but President Ronald Reagan ordered them removed in the mid-80s. In 2003, President George W. Bush installed a solar heating system for the home’s swimming pool.
