ARNOLD, Md. — Police have made an arrest after a telephone report of a hostage situation that turned out to be a hoax.

Anne Arundel County police announced Thursday that 43-year-old George Walter Carlisle II, of no fixed address, has been charged with telephone misuse, disrupting school operations and providing a false statement to authorities.

Police say the call was made on Tuesday. The caller represented himself as a college professor who said there was an armed female student inside of Anne Arundel Community College holding about eight students hostage.

When officers arrived, they quickly determined the call was a hoax.

Police Chief Kevin Davis says law enforcement takes all hoaxes extremely seriously, because they put the public at risk and elicit a large police response.
