RICHMOND, Va. — The Washington Redskins had another practice washed out by rain Saturday. Coach Mike Shanahan didn’t mind at all.

“I’ll be honest with you, I think the guy upstairs kind of took care of me today, because I wasn’t really sure about practicing,” Shanahan said. “I felt we were a little sore as a football team. We needed a little bit more rest.”

The Redskins have their share of bumps and bruises following Thursday’s win over the Tennessee Titans in the preseason opener. Near the top of the list is rookie safety Phillip Thomas, who sprained his left foot in the game.

Shanahan said doctors have ruled out a fracture or more serious injury for the fourth-round pick from Fresno State.

“He’s a little sore right now — mid-foot,” Shanahan said. “I can’t tell you how long it’s going to be, but it’ll probably be a few days.”

Shanahan said Thomas has the same injury as another draft pick, third-round tight end Jordan Reed. Reed had been wearing a walking boot on his right foot, but Shanahan said it’s been removed.

“It’s feeling better today,” Shanahan said.

Veteran receiver Donte Stallworth, trying to stick around for another NFL season, suffered another setback in his uphill climb to make the roster at a crowded position. Stallworth aggravated the left hamstring that has bothered him for much of camp and will likely miss the next preseason game.

“You can see it was bothering him during the game, both on special teams as well as offense, but he tried to play through it,” Shanahan said. “I thought he did a good job, but we’ve got to make sure that thing heals up, so we’re not going to push him too quickly.”

Undrafted rookie linebacker Jeremy Kimbrough separated his right shoulder and could miss “a couple of days” to a “few weeks,” according to Shanahan. Kimbrough was already a longshot to make the team.

The Redskins already had scheduled a day off for Sunday, so the team will resume practice Monday. Shanahan has been noncommittal as to when he’ll increase the workout load for quarterback Robert Griffin III, who has been limited to 7-on-7 drills while returning from reconstructive knee surgery.

“You’ve got to do the best thing for the team,” Shanahan said. “And, you know, we’ll deal with it.”
