LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — A Maryland teenager is accused of using a Craigslist ad for an iPhone 5 to facilitate the armed robberies of several people, police say.
Jacob Patrick Valentine, 17, of Glen Burnie would use the online ad to set up meetings with people interested in buying the phone outside George Cromwell Elementary School in Glen Burnie, according to Anne Arundel County police.
When the potential buyers would arrive at the school, Valentine would show them what appeared to be a black handgun and rob them of their money and cell phone before fleeing the scene, police say. Multiple victims told police they were robbed by Valentine in a similar fashion in the past week.
Valentine was arrested Tuesday when an undercover detective responded to his Craigslist ad and took him into custody after Valentine attempted to rob the officer. Police recovered the handgun Valentine used in the robberies and determined it to be a pellet gun.
Police say Valentine had six additional appointments set up through the same Craigslist ad.
Valentine is being charged with multiple counts of armed robbery and related offenses stemming from robbery investigations. He is being charged as an adult.
