Brewer to Press Obama About Status of Disaster Declaration Request for Fire That Killed 19 Firefighters

PHOENIX — Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer will ask President Barack Obama about the status of her disaster declaration request for the Yarnell Hill fire when the two meet at Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix Tuesday.

Finger-wagging isn’t expected.

Brewer spokesman Andrew Wilder says the governor will press Obama on the request she sent a month ago. She wants a major federal disaster declaration along with access to a federal assistance program for individuals. Nineteen firefighters died battling the blaze on June 30.

Approval would bring long-term federal recovery programs to Yavapai County to help survivors and businesses that didn’t have adequate insurance. It also would allow a federal team to do flood prevention work.

Brewer famously wagged her index finger at Obama during a contentious runway meeting in January 2012.
