WASHINGTON (CBSDC) - Gio Gonzalez (7-4) gave up 10 runs — one short of his career high — and 11 hits over 3 1-3 innings in the Nationals’ devastating 11-1 loss to the Tigers Wednesday.

His five-run second inning, in which he gave up home runs to Alex Avila and Torii Hunter, contributed to the Nats dropping the second of two games in Detroit, bringing Washington to 52-56 on the season and setting them 10.5 games behind Atlanta in the NL East.

Justin Verlander (11-8) secured the victory, giving up just one run on four hits and five walks to the Nationals, while striking out six over six innings.
