WASHINGTON — Georgetown’s would-be new mascot is dog-gone.

The school announced Wednesday that Jack Jr. — or “J.J.” — will not be the successor to Jack the Bulldog, who is retiring after years of being a featured attraction at Hoyas basketball games and other campus functions.

A release states the university spent 18 months helping J.J. “learn about life on a busy college campus” before deciding the dog was better suited for a “home environment.” The statement says the school’s bulldog mascot tradition will continue, presumably with another dog.

Caught off guard was the associate professor and chaplain who acts as the university’s “keeper of the mascot.” Christopher Steck issued his own statement, saying the decision was a “surprise and disappointment” and he believes J.J. “would thrive as the next university mascot.”
