WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – The Town was the best Boston neighborhood/crime/action/drama flick to come out since The Departed, and it’s not up for debate.
Now, a new reality show will try to capture the cinematic drama of both, unscripted and unfiltered.
Christo Doyle, executive producer of Discovery’s upcoming series “Saint Hoods,” took to the streets of Southie to follow three of Boston’s most notorious crews, as they continue to rule the streets with old school gang-like principles in the 21st century – an inside look at Boston’s shady gambling underworld.
“No one’s ever done a show on kind of the inside on what’s going on with these bookmakers,” Doyle told the Junkies on 106.7 The Fan Tuesday.
“Boston’s been run the same way for almost a hundred years,” he said. “Neighborhood crews have kind of controlled the underworld of Boston.”
Despite the lure of the cameras and the potential rise in stature a reality show could bring these old-minded crews, Doyle insists it wasn’t easy gaining their trust in allowing him and his own crew to film them.
“It took a couple months for us to get in with these guys to gain their trust,” he said of the three individual crews – Southie, Roslindale and Dorchester – whom he says still completely run their neighborhoods.
“These three main crews are still doing it today,” Doyle explained. “They’re the bookmakers, they’re the protectors and they’re kind of the keepers of the neighborhood. They’re kind of a one-stop shop. You go to them to place bets, but also they take care of any problems you might have within the city.”
The series premieres Friday, August 2 at 10 PM ET/PT on Discovery. The interview was absolutely fascinating, in all sincerity. You can re-listen to it in its entirety below.
