WASHINGTON — A woman who admitted to drinking and smoking crack cocaine before driving her car on the sidewalk and killing a pedestrian has been sentenced to 7 years in prison.
Forty-nine-year-old Maria N. Werts of Washington was sentenced Friday in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. She had pleaded guilty in May to involuntary manslaughter and driving under the influence.
According to government evidence, on April 28, Werts was driving on South Capitol Street and drove onto the sidewalk. Prosecutors say she struck 58-year-old Emmajean Gainey, pinning her against a tree and killing her.
