MARRERO, La. — A New Orleans police officer is recovering after being struck while on a motorcycle in the motorcade escorting Michelle Obama to a suburban grocery store.
Garry Flot, a spokesman for the department, says the officer was hit Tuesday afternoon at an intersection not far from Sterling Farms grocery in Marrero. The first lady, who champions healthy eating, was headed there after speaking about health and nutrition at the National Council of La Raza conference.
Actor Wendell Pierce opened the store as part of an effort to provide better food access to underserved neighborhoods impacted by Hurricane Katrina.
Flot says the officer was taken to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries, which he described as “not life threatening.” His name was not released.
The accident remains under investigation.
