NEW ORLEANS (AP) — First lady Michelle Obama is spending Tuesday in New Orleans, where she is scheduled to address the nation’s largest Latino advocacy and civil rights organization.

The National Council of La Raza opened its annual meeting on Saturday. One prominent topic has been comprehensive immigration legislation and its prospects for passage in the current Congress. The immigration bill and its possible effects on millions of Latinos in the United States were laced throughout discussions on the conference schedule.

The conference and a related “Family Expo” were expected to draw an estimated 25,000 participants.

The first lady is scheduled to speak before noon.

The conference ends Tuesday.
