Pilot Dies in Spotsylvania Plane Crash

SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. — The pilot of a single-engine plane has been killed in a crash in Spotsylvania County, Va.

The Virginia State Police said that the crash occurred at around 6:30 p.m. Monday. Police said in a news release that the plane was flying near Shannon Airport when it crash-landed near a runway. The plane caught fire and the pilot, the sole occupant, died.

State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said the plane had taken off from the same airport, but she did not immediately know how long it had been in flight.

Police said the cause of the crash is under investigation. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified. The victim’s name wasn’t immediately released.
