LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — The Washington Capitals will begin their 2013-14 season against the Stanley Cup-winning Chicago Blackhawks at United Center on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
The first home game of the season for the Caps is set for Thursday, Oct. 3, against the Calgary Flames.
The NHL will also have two, eight-team divisions in the Eastern Conference and two, seven-team divisions in the Western Conference. The Caps will join the Rangers, Islanders, Devils, Penguins, Flyers, Hurricanes and Blue Jackets in the Metropolitan Division.
Other notable dates in the Caps schedule include a break from Feb. 9 through Feb. 25, 2014, when many NHL players will be competing in the Winter Olympics in Sochi, and Feb. 2, 2014, when the Capitals will host the Detroit Red Wings on the same day as the Super Bowl. This will mark the fourth time in five years Washington will play on Super Bowl Sunday.
Nearly half of Washington’s 41 home games will played on weekends, including six games on Fridays, eight on Saturdays and seven on Sundays.
