LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — A second major accident on the Inner Loop of the Capital Beltway in Prince George’s County is snarling traffic just hours after a fatal crash forced a lengthy complete closure of the roadway overnight.
Four adults were taken to the hospital following an 11-car crash near Ritchie Marlboro Road (exit 13) around 8:45 a.m. Thursday, fire officials say.
Three men and one woman suffered non life-threatening injuries according to Prince George’s County Fire spokesman Mark Brady. A box truck driver became trapped and was extricated from the vehicle by first responders at the scene.
The first crash occurred around 12:30 a.m. four miles up the road near the Branch Avenue exit and involved two motorcycles and two passenger vehicles, Maryland State Police say.
One motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene and another has been taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries, authorities say.
All lanes of the roadway were blocked for more than five hours while police investigated the accident.
It’s unclear whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
The lanes reopened just before 6 a.m. Police originally hoped to have the lanes reopened around 5:30 a.m.
