LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — An attack on a young boy at a lemonade stand in Fairfax is being investigated as a possible hate crime, police say.
A 12-year-old boy was operating a lemonade stand with a sibling in the courtyard of the Camden Monument Place Apartments in the 12000 block of Monument Drive on July 6 when he was approached by an adult male dressed in a “Halloween-type costume,” said Lucy Caldwell, a Fairfax County police spokesperson.
The suspect threw a liquid-filled balloon at the 12-year-old boy and yelled at the children. The boy’s father told police the balloon was filled with urine, Caldwell said.
Caldwell said she couldn’t discuss what the suspect allegedly said to the boy, but The Washington Post reports the suspect yelled, “Go back to Africa you [expletives]! It was only piss.”
Police are continuing to investigate the assault.
“It does have elements of a bias crime,” Caldwell said. “It is a very unusual case.”
