LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — The Embassy of the Republic of South Africa, the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists and TransAfrica came together to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday.

The celebration took place at the Metropolitan A.M.E. Church Thursday evening.

South Africa’s first black president was born July 18, 1918 and is known for bringing an end to apartheid in the racially divided country.

Globally recognized as an icon for peace, many celebrated the ailing leader’s birthday.

Mandela has been hospitalized since June 8 with complications from a lung infection.
