ACCOKEEK, Md. — The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission says more than 10,000 gallons of untreated wastewater have spilled into Accokeek Creek.

The spill occurred Friday next to the WSSC’s Piscataway Wastewater Treatment Plant. It lasted roughly 3 hours.

The WSSC says it’s looking into the cause of the overflow. State environmental officials and local health officials have been notified, and signs have been posted warning people to avoid the overflow area.

The sewage that spilled was diluted but untreated.
