BRISTOW, Va. (CBSDC) — A fuel tanker overturned late Thursday night in Prince William County, sparking concerns about a possible gas explosion, officials said.

The tanker, which was carrying about 8,000 gallons of gasoline, tipped over onto its passenger side outside the Braemar Village Center on Sudley Manor Drive in Bristow at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday, police said.

Several thousand gallons of fuel spilled onto the roadway, causing officials to bring in a hazmat team to protect against a possible explosion.

Residents living on Merrimont Trace Circle and Manor Hall Court were advised by officials to remain in their homes while crews worked to clean up and secure the spill. Officials say all shelter-in-place restrictions have been lifted.

Sudley Manor Drive remains closed between Linton Hall Road and Dunbarton Drive. Prince William County officials say they hope to have the roadway open by 9 a.m.

They don’t know if wet road conditions played a factor in the accident.
