POTOMAC, Md. (CBSDC/AP) — A woman died after her kayak overturned on the Potomac River on Thursday, officials said.

Two kayakers were reported missing just after 4 p.m. in the Great Falls area of the Potomac River, according to Montgomery County fire spokesman Scott Graham.

Rescue personnel were able to pull one man from the water but couldn’t locate the missing woman. The woman’s body was pulled from of the water just after 7 p.m. Thursday, Graham said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man told rescuers that the woman he was with got out of her kayak, removed her life jacket and tried to swim to shore, Graham said.

About a dozen fellow kayakers worked with the fire department to recover the 24-year-old woman’s body from the river.

Chuck Thornton, an organizer of this weekend’s Great Falls Race for kayakers, says the woman had come to town to participate in the race, which is scheduled to begin Saturday.
