Man Shot By Police Inside Howard County Store
COLUMBIA, Md. (CBSDC/AP) — A man was shot by police inside a store in Howard County on Wednesday, police said.
The shooting occurred just after 11 a.m. inside a BJ’s Wholesale Club store on Snowden River Parkway in Columbia. Police say when the man was approached by security staff for shoplifting, he threatened them with a knife.
Officers say the man ran from the store, picked up a stick and smashed the glass door of a bus. He could not get on the bus, so police say the man ran back into the store, still brandishing the knife.
Authorities say the man was confronted by a police officer in the automotive section of the store. After continuing to refuse the officer’s requests to put the knife down, the man was shot by the officer, police say.
The man, who police have identified as 33-year-old Howard Carvel Smith of Columbia, was taken by ambulance to Shock Trauma in Baltimore with what officials initially called non-life threatening injuries. Hospital officials now say he his in critical condition.
An investigation into the shooting is underway.
