WASHINGTON — District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray is warning that hundreds of thousands of residents may have to get new driver’s licenses or passports if a bill allowing people in the country illegally to get licenses becomes law.

Gray wants people living in the U.S. without legal permission to get driver’s licenses, but he wants them to be marked as invalid for federal identification purposes. The D.C. Council will vote Wednesday on allowing residents to get the same license regardless of their immigration status.

The mayor says in a letter to the council that he disagrees with the federal law that could invalidate district driver’s licenses, but he can’t ignore it. He says he doesn’t want to place a burden on residents by forcing them to pay for new, enhanced licenses.
