LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — The Washington Nationals have acquired outfielder Scott Hairston from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for minor league right-handed pitching prospect Ivan Pineyro. Both teams will also receive players to be named later as part of the trade.
Hairston, 33, is hitting .172 with 19 runs batted in and 8 home runs in 99 plate appearances this season. He is a career .244 hitter.
The former Cub will provide Washington with depth off the bench and should be a quality choice for Davey Johnson against left-handed pitching.
Hairston signed a two-year, $5 million contract with Chicago prior to this season. The contract is to be paid equally over its duration, meaning the Nationals will be on the hook for the remainder of his pay this year and $2.5 million in 2014.
He slugged a career-high 20 home runs with the New York Mets last season including 3 pinch-hit appearances.
Pineyro, 21, is 6-3 with a 3.24 earned runs average in 15 starts this season with Single-A Potomac and Hagerstown.
