RICHMOND, Va. — Police believe a handgun fired a stray bullet that killed a 7-year-old boy in Chesterfield County.
Chesterfield County police told media outlets on Monday that the bullet is of a caliber that’s typically fired from a handgun.
Police continue to search for the person who fired the gun.
The bullet struck Brendon Mackey on the top of his head as he walked with his father to a July 4 fireworks display at Swift Creek Reservoir. The boy died the next day.
Police believe the shot was fired randomly into the air, not and intentional act.
