WASHINGTON (CBSDC) - Capitals fans can cross center Mike Ribeiro off the list of current players the team was looking to retain for the 2013-14 NHL season.
Ribeiro, 33, will be departing Washington after reportedly agreeing to terms on a 4-year, $22 million deal with the Phoenix Coyotes.
Washington placed signing Ribeiro at a premium this offseason, but wouldn’t budge on offering the unrestricted free agent more than 3 years, although he was seeking a long-term deal closer to six years.
Ribeiro would have taken less money to remain in Washington and secure a long-term home for his family, in exchange for a longer deal, and even said as much.
He fit in well with the Caps’ second line this season, registering 49 points, with 13 goals and 36 assists through 48 games. He had two points in the postseason for the Caps, with 1 goal and 1 assist in a 7-game series with the Rangers.
