GAITHERSBURG, Md. (CBSDC) — A man is dead and a woman is injured after the SUV they were traveling in crashed and flipped over while apparently attempting to flee from police early Thursday in Gaithersburg.

Authorities say officers patrolling North Summit Avenue spotted a sports utility vehicle driving with its high-beam headlights on around 1:30 a.m. Montgomery County Police say the cruise made a U-Turn in an attempt to make a traffic stop, but lost sight of the vehicle as it sped away and ran a red light.

A short time later the vehicle crashed and overturned in the 500 block of East Diamond Avenue near Girard Street. A preliminary investigation reveals the SUV struck a utility pole, a bus stop, a tree, and fire hydrant in the wreck.

Both occupants were thrown from the SUV in the crash, police say.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Their identities have not been released.

The road remained closed for nearly eight hours while authorities investigated the fatal crash.
