National Cathedral to Hold Service on Gay Marriage

WASHINGTON — Washington National Cathedral plans to hold a special prayer service for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender families on the day when the Supreme Court may rule on the legality of gay marriage.

The cathedral scheduled the service for Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. to celebrate, grieve or anticipate the Supreme Court’s ruling.

In a statement, the cathedral’s dean, the Rev. Gary Hall, says having the freedom to marry you love is not only a constitutional right but also a moral right. Hall announced in January that the cathedral would begin performing same-sex marriages.

At issue is the constitutionality of the federal Defense of Marriage Act and California’s ban on gay marriage.

The cathedral says it will continue to advocate for same-sex marriage regardless of what the court decides.
