Teen Driver in Fatal Skateboard Accident Charged

LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Reckless driving charges have been filed against an Arlington teenager who was involved in a fatal traffic accident June 4.

John Malvar, an 18-year-old Washington-Lee student, was riding his skateboard while hanging on to the driver’s side window frame of a vehicle driven by the 17-year-old when he lost his balance and fell, hitting his head on the road.

Malvar, who was not wearing a helmet, succumbed to his injuries at George Washington University Hospital several hours later.

The teenage driver appeared before a judge in Arlington County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Tuesday and was formally charged. A trial date has been set for Aug. 8. He was released to the custody of a parent.
