WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — A large sink hole formed in Northwest D.C. on Tuesday, nearly swallowing a car, authorities said.

The 3-foot by 7-foot sink hole opened in an elevated parking lot behind the Perry School in the 100 block of M Street NW near 1st Street NW just after 5:30 p.m., police said.

The front left area of a car parked in the lot had dropped into the edge of the hole but the car did not fall into the hole. No one was in the car and no injuries were reported, officials said.

Authorities said they are continuing to investigate what caused the sink hole.
