ELLICOTT CITY, Md. — Howard County police have charged a man they say tried to hit officers with his car with attempted murder.

Police say they received calls about 11:25 a.m. Tuesday saying a vehicle was stopped in the middle of Normandy Drive in Ellicott City. Officers who went up to the vehicle say they saw the driver huffing, or using an inhalant.

Authorities say the man drove off erratically through traffic. Three police cars pursued the vehicle and blocked it on a dead-end street.

Police say the driver drove directly toward officers in an attempt to escape. One officer fired at the driver, but did not hit him. No one was injured.

Thirty-seven-year-old Sean Brian Witt of Ellicott City has been charged with attempted murder, DUI and numerous other offenses.
