LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — One man is dead and another has been hospitalized following an attempted domestic murder-suicide early Tuesday in Northwest Washington.

Police say a 55-year-old man shot his 79-year-old step-father before fatally turning the gun on himself shortly before 6 a.m. in the 500 block of Quincy Street NW.

The 55-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. The step-father was conscious and breathing when he was taken to the hospital. He is still alive, but his exact condition is unknown.

A motive for the shooting is not immediately clear, though police believe the younger man was caring for his stepfather, who is ill and wheelchair bound.

This story will be updated.
