LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Three Washington Nationals fans are in the running to attend the MLB All-Star game in New York. While the competition is fierce, they’ve faced much greater hardships.
The contestants are part of “Tribute for Heroes” an initiative which recognizes veterans and military service members that have had success on and off the battlefield.
MLB paired with PEOPLE magazine to identify those military service members that have excelled in their service to the United States.
The campaign waded through numerous applicants all over the country and have picked three contestants for each of the 30 MLB teams.
For a region like Washington, with so many distinguished military personnel, it was a tough job, but a spokesperson with the Nationals says they didn’t just look at their accomplishments in active duty.
“When they’ve come back from overseas service they’ve continued to work within the military ranks or within community service.”
Now, it’s time for the public to vote by heading to Tribute for Heroes and picking which member should represent the Nationals in New York.
The contestant with the most votes will attend the All-Star game July 16.
Voting ends June 30.
