WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – Potential Wizards draftee Anthony Bennett, a standout freshman at UNLV, made quite the impression on reporters after working out for the team Thursday afternoon, despite being noticeably nervous in his surroundings.

As the 6’8” Player of the Year finalist told those reporters, “I’m really shy. Like all this is something I’m not used to.”

Projected to be a Top 5 pick, the extra attention is something Bennett will have to acclimate himself to though, along with situations like being approached by fans outside hotels, as he was during his stay in D.C.

“I got dropped off and then there was a fan just sitting there,” Bennett explained. “And at first, I didn’t really pay attention. I was going upstairs and then he was like ‘hey Anthony.’ I looked. He had a whole bunch of pictures with him. He’s like ‘hey, can you sign these?’ I said ‘no problem.’ And like the last picture he showed me was me with Otto Porter.”

“It was just real cool. I had to take one,” he joked. “I signed one, then I was like ‘hey, let me get the other one.’”

The obvious pick for the Wizards would be to take the local kid, Porter at No. 3, but Bennett’s camp has been growing in support as the 2013 NBA Draft draws near. Hats off to that fan for playing it down the middle with the pic.

There were things discussed that actually relate to the game of basketball, like how Bennett’s asthma affects his play, and what he has to say about negative reports concerning his defensive ability.

“It’s not really a big deal,” Bennett said. “It’s not like I’m the first one in the NBA to have it. It’s just something I’ve got to take care of; eating right, using the inhalers.”

As for his defense, he agrees it’s something he can improve upon.

“I go hard playing defense, but I don’t know how things end up,” Bennett said. “But I feel like if I work on my quickness, everything will be alright.”

For Wizards fans who’ve been closely following the team’s needs, specifically those mentioned by John Wall and Bradley Beal, Bennett did say he became familiar with the pick-and-pop in college, something he got progressively better at as the season went on.

He believes he’s working out in Orlando, Cleveland and Charlotte next, the three teams picking around the Wizards in the NBA Draft.
