BOWIE, Md. (CBSDC/AP) — An Upper Marlboro man, 32-year-old James Dejay Toliver, was killed in a car accident involving a Prince George’s County police officer early Wednesday morning in Bowie, police said.

The officer, 54-year-old Corporal Michael Mogavero, was on-duty and responding to the report of an unrelated collision in Bowie just after 3 a.m. when his police cruiser collided with a vehicle at the intersection of Md. 197 and London Lane, according to Prince George’s police Deputy Chief Hector Velez.

Toliver was injured in the crash and later died from his injuries at the hospital. Mogavero, a nine-year veteran assigned to the Special Operations Division, suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from the hospital, Velez said.

Police did not say whether the cruiser’s lights and siren were activated.

Police are investigating the crash and Velez says police haven’t identified any witnesses to the collision. They’re investigating the cause, including through dash cam video, and trying to determine who is at fault.
