Va. Grocery Store Throws 103-Year-Old Surprise Birthday Party

WOODBRIDGE, Va. (CBSDC) — A surprise party for a centenarian? At a grocery store? On a Monday morning? It all sounds a little out of the ordinary. Then again, 103-year-old Doris Woodring is a little out of the ordinary.

“It’s a wonder I didn’t have an accident,” she joked as the guest of honor at the Giant grocery store on Hedges Run Drive in Woodbridge, a store she’s visited every Monday for the last 20 years.

Her secret to longevity, she told WNEW’s Kevin Patrick, is “having a zest for life and really enjoying everything.” Especially spending time with her three daughters.

While she’s pretty carefree, one thing that does concern Woodring is what the friends who preceded her in death will think about the fact that she hasn’t joined them yet.

“My friends in Heaven will think I didn’t make it,” she said with a laugh.
