WASHINGTON (CBSDC) - Millions of Americans take vacations starting Memorial Day weekend through the rest of the summer, but many overlook the importance of preparing their medications properly while packing for a trip.

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) has important tips to keep in mind while preparing for a trip, including unexpected circumstances to take into account, like travel delays, and packing medication properly.

Something you may not think about before boarding a plane for instance, is keeping your medication close to you in your carry-on, for safety and for practical reasons.

“One, you have access to them during the flight,” said Barbara Young of the ASHP. “And also the checked baggage storage on a plane is not often temperature-controlled, and the storage of medication there is not good.”

Other things to consider are risks you may face purchasing medication overseas, the best places to store what you do have, and how to obtain any necessary refills while on the road.

All this and more is covered on the Safe Medication website, which you can find here.
